Best safety gear
Overlanding comes with it's own set of risks, so preparing to minimise those is a wise thing to do. Do it for the sake of your family and friends.
Satelite communicators are a great way to do this, because they are cheaper then a satelite phone. When you leave the safety of cellular coverage, with one of these in your pocket you are always able to alert the authorities in case of an accident or an emergency.
The market for these devices is incresing by the day, but there are only two devices I would recommend.
Best Satellite Communicator
Garmin Inreach
Forget about satellite phones, even though they look so cool in the movies, they are expensive to purchase, to get a contract and pay per minute.
Instead you should get a Garmin Inreach+ or Mini. These devices are called satellite 2-way communicators. You can send and receive sms and emails everywhere around the world with this thing.
After purchasing a device, you will still need to sign up for a plan. Depending on your needs these will cost in between $11.95/€ 14,99 per month up to $64.95/€ 74,99 per month.
Why I recommend the Garmin is because of their choice of satellite network. They are on the Iridium Network which is the best in the world, covering all the little nooks and crannies of our planet so you can be sure to always find a connection.
Worldwide coverage with the iridium network
Best price Satellite Communicator
SPOT GEN 4
The 4th Generation of the SPOT tracker is slimmer then ever and slips right into any pocket. Which is great, because these devices are best carried on your body.
It is considerably more affordable then the Garmin Inreach but has similar functionalities. The main difference is the satelite network that is being used. The SPOT doesn't get coverage world wide. Especially Africa and the Middle East don't get any connection.
If you are planning a journey in those areas then a spot is not for you. Otherwise, you might be perfectly satisfied with the device.
Expected coverage for the SPOT trackers
Best First Aid kit for overlanding
Getting hurt while traveling is always going to happen, and it is probably just a cut yourself while cooking. With a decent first aid kit you are able to bandage the would without it getting infected. The Surviveware Comprehensive First Aid Kit is one of the best thought through first aid kits on the market.
It comes in two sizes, the large on is perfect for in the car and with the straps you can put it in an easily accessible spot so that you can reach it when in an emergency. The smaller version is perfect for two wheeler overlanders or anyone who is very space conscious.
Safety for women
a "fake" wedding ring
Traveling around the world solo as a woman can be daunting and especially in certain cultures. My mom bought me my first fake wedding ring to wear while traveling through Iran and Pakistan and I've never taken it over since.
I have used it in situations where I was asked about a husband and I always managed to come up with some story and felt reassured by being able to point at my ring as "proof".
I highly recommend any woman traveling alone to get herself one even though I hope one day we dont' have to.
